Pune continued its impressive record of “no cheating” in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board Class X exams that commenced on Thursday. While the rest of the state registered a total of 168 cheating cases. Pune division saw 29 cheating cases, with 26 in Solapur and three in Ahmednagar in the exam conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE).
Students appeared for the first language paper (the group comprises Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Sindhi, Bengali and Punjabi) and French as the second language on Thursday.
About 1.3 lakh students appeared from the Pune district and over 2.7 lakh from the division (and another 13,164 repeated the exams who had failed to clear them in the previos academic sessions). About 17 lakh students appeared for the exam.
Other divisions that saw zero cheating cases were Latur, Konkan, Mumbai and Kolhapur. The highest number of cheating cases on the first day were at Nagpur division with 70 cases, followed by 44 in Nashik, 29 in Pune, 19 in Aurangabad and six in Amravati division. Shahaji Dhekne, secretary, MSBSHSE, said, “We seem to have been able to curb cheating to a large extent. In the 2010-11 session, the total number of cheating cases in the state was 2008, while in 2009-10 we found 1878 cheating cases. This year the start seems to be good, and even HSC has been good so far.”
When asked about the high incidence of cheating in Nashik this year, Dhekne explained, “This shows the invigilators in Nasik have taken the anti-cheating drive very seriously. As per the reports received we have been told that a change is visible.”Talking about the changed syllabus for Science and Maths this year, he said, “We have already given our sample papers of the new syllabus to schools and students, so we’re hoping students will be well prepared. The other change – two separate answer booklets for the science paper – is one system that we expect will also go smoothly. We introduced it after teachers and paper evaluators from the Vidarbha region requested for it.”
Puja Joshi, a student who appeared for the Marathi paper today said, “The Marathi paper was fairly easy. I just have my fingers crossed for German on March 9 and Maths and Science papers later.”
