 After being pursued by the state government for the last six months, IT giant Infosys signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) for setting up a unit in the Mihan-SEZ.

However, the move is still short of clinching the final deal with this state government company which will ultimately lead to allotment of land to Infosys in the SEZ.

The documents were signed in Nagpur by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan who is chairman of MADC. Some senior bureaucrats and politicians were present.

Technically, an MoU differs from an agreement as the former is generally an expression of willingness by the two parties to enter into a pact if certain conditions are met by both.

State governments often sign MoUs with prospective investors from the industry some of which materialize. In this case, other formalities are being done. MADC has called it the biggest investment proposal so far.

Infosys proposes to take up 142 acres of land in the SEZ, where it plans to come up with its 12th campus in the country. CEO and managing director SD Shibulal told the media that the company plans to invest Rs 150 crore and that 2,000-3,000 jobs would be created in the initial phase. The operations are likely to start within three years, added Shibulal.

The seminar funded by University Grants Commission is a brainchild of Sanjay Charalwar, principal of MCC. "Our examination system is totally memory based. We are judging students on their ability to write after recalling the content rather than understanding it. The system is over 50 years old and many things have changed in the meantime," said Charalwar.

Ajit Kulkarni, professor at IIT-Mumbai, believes that slowly changes are coming which are keeping pace with times. "Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation of students is one of the ways forward where we can test what they have understood in a better way. The semester system is also a good concept which is finding support among educators," he added.

The Controller of Examinations at Nagpur University SP Kane felt that technology is will play a crucial part in the evaluation process. "If a student applies for re-evaluation then it takes a long time to get completed and everyone believes it is the university's fault. The delay occurs due to the system currently in place where a certain process has to be followed. The application acceptance process takes weeks which further affects the evaluation time. The NU too is in the process of modernizing many things with the hope of ultimately benefiting the students," said Kane.

 Nagpur College of Homoeopathy (NCH) have been attended by undergraduate students. On Tuesday, the patients had to go back unattended as these students too joined their striking teachers who have not been paid salaries for the last eight months. Parents of students also gathered in the college to meet trustee GD Panpaliya, who has given them a written assurance of taking necessary action in next 15 days.

The college lost its affiliation to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) for current academic session owing to insufficient staff and infrastructure. The university has given Satchikitsa Prasarak Mandal Trust that runs the college a list of requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to regain affiliation. Students and parents say the management is not bothered to renew affiliation while the president of the trust Panpaliya says he is in talks with the university and the problems are being created by some staffers for maligning the college.

The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) will commence sale of application forms for Maharashtra Health and Technology Common Entrance Examination (MHT-CET) on March 19. Forms will be sold till March 31. The exam would be conducted on May 10.

DMER is a competent authority for the test which annually draws over two lakh engineering, medical and pharmacy degree aspirants from Maharashtra and other states. Over 1.10 lakh engineering seats, 7,000 medical and 8,345 pharmacy seats are up for grabs.

DMER officials said, the sale and submission of application forms and information brochure would be done through respective schools and junior colleges. For outside Maharashtra candidates (OMS), it would be available at the offices of divisional authorities in every district. The form and brochure would be available for Rs 700 for general and OMS candidates while it would be provided for Rs 500 for those belonging to reserve category.

Dean of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at Hanuman Nagar is the divisional authority for Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts. Akola Government Medical College dean is the divisional authority for Amravati division consisting of five districts - Yavatmal, Akola, Amravati, Washim and Buldhana.

Candidates clearing this exam can take admission to government or municipal corporation, aided and unaided colleges for health science courses. Similarly, candidates can become eligible for admission to government, aided, university managed colleges and departments, autonomous colleges, including Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, and unaided private colleges of engineering and pharmacy courses. The admission of bachelor of veterinary sciences and animal husbandry (BVSc and AH) would also be done on MHT-CET scores.
